Video Pick of the Week: Nora Buschmann Plays Carlos Aguirre’s ‘Baião’

Baião, by Argentinian composer, pianist and guitarist Carlos Aguirre (b. 1965) is, like Paulo Bellinati’s Jongo, one of those driving, highly rhythmic, melodic, unmistakably South American workouts that is irresistible to so many guitarists. It’s no wonder it’s popularity continues to grow! The piece is part of Aguirre’s suite called Paisajes, dedicated to guitarist Eduardo Isaac, but has taken on a life of its own. Here it is played by the fine German guitarist Nora Buschmann, who attended the Liszt School of Music in Weimar, was a solo pupil of Hubert Käppel at Cologne College of Music, and also was tutored by Carlo Domeniconi (who dedicated a piece to her) and others. A past winner of numerous competitions, these days she is a guitar professor at the Musikhochschule in Rostock and Dresden, Germany, and also concertizes regularly. If you’re looking for a fun encore piece, this might be a good one to seek out! —Blair Jackson
