Sunday Prodigy #11: Katie Cho (13) Plays Fernando Sor’s ‘Sonata in C major Op. 15’

Born in the state of Maryland, USA, 18-year-old Katie Cho took up classical guitar at the age of 8 and almost immediately showed great promise (indeed, YouTube has several videos of her at 11 playing Carcassi, Villa-Lobos, and more). So it wasn’t exactly a surprise when her playing really started to blossom in her early teens. In 2015 she came in second in the GFA’s Youth competition, and the following year she took First Prize in the Boston Guitar Fest. Her guitar education includes studying with Jorge Amaral in Maryland, with Franco Platino at the Levine School of Music in Washington D.C., and more recently at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she’s working toward her Bachelor of Music of Performance degree under the tutelage of Manuel Barrueco.
