Our Pick this time comes from the excellent young Spanish guitarist Andrea González Caballero, who offers her interpretation of Joaquín Rodrigo’s ‘Fandango’ from Tres Piezas Españolas, written in 1954 and dedicated to Andrés Segovia, who also recorded it. It’s a lively and fun piece, with plenty of Spanish flavor and also some typically unusual harmonies from the composer.

Caballero has been making a name for herself all over Europe the last several years. Performing since she was 8 year old, she has studied the instrument extensively since, mostly in Germany. She has played in Spain, Hungary, Mexico, Cuba, Holland, Germany, Italy, and the UK, and also appeared in a number of competitions in various countries. In 2016, she took the first prize in the prestigious biennial Alhambra International Guitar Competition in Spain, a victory which also has earned her the opportunity to record an album for Naxos Records. So we’ll keep an eye out for that… and for her; a fine player! —Blair Jackson
