Isaac Albéniz’s Cataluña is a piano piece that debuted in 1899, part of the Spanish composer’s famous Suite Española, Op. 47. It migrated from the piano to guitar thanks to a transcription by Miguel Llobet, and has been widely played (and re-transcribed) by guitarists ever since. Here, it is senstively performed by the splendid virtuoso Irene Gómez, whose stellar career has included studies in her native Colombia, France, and at Juilliard School in New York City, years of touring, several CD recordings, and a current post as a teacher for the Conservatory of Music at the National University of Colombia. She is also a participant in Strings By Mail’s “Master Class Series” of online videos. —Blair Jackson
