One of Argentina’s most prolific and important 20th century composers, Carlos Guastavino (1912–2000) wrote more than 500 songs, piano pieces, chamber works, choral pieces—and three guitar sonatas! This first movement of his 1967 Sonata No. 1 (“allegro deciso e molto ritmico”) shows the clear influence of Argentine folk music, as well as Spanish composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
