Video Pick of the Week: The Sheu Pettit Duo Plays Brouwer’s ‘Sonata de los Viajeros’

The new Summer 2018 issue of Classical Guitar will be coming off the printing presses in early May, and gracing our cover this time is the great Cuban composer/arranger/conductor Leo Brouwer, who sat down for an interview with CG‘s Julia Crowe during Brouwer’s February trip to the U.S., his first in 18 years.

So, that sounds like a good excuse to feature one of Brouwer’s works for this week’s Video Pick. In this freshly minted clip, the dynamic guitar duo of Connie Sheu and Adam Pettit (last featured in a Video Pick performing Andrew York’s Virtu), play the lively fourth (final) movement of Brouwer’s 2009 Sonata de los Viajeros, called “Por el Mar de las Antillas.” It has a very strong, rhythmic, Latin-folk vibe. An excellent studio recording of the entire Sonata appeared on the Brasil Guitar Duo’s  2015 Naxos release Leo Brouwer: Music for Two Guitars. —Blair Jackson
