Andrew York has long been one of the brightest stars in the classical guitar world. From his work with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet for two decades (1986–2006) to his solo career during and after his tenure with that group, York has shown himself to be an incredibly versatile guitarist and also an important composer of pieces for the instrument. Plus he’s a nice guy! Our Video Pick of the Week this time finds York playing one of his best-known (and most-played) pieces, “Sunburst,” which has been recorded by John Williams, Jason Vieaux, and Xuefei Yang, among others. It’s virtuosic at the same time it has a certain folk/Americana essence that’s highly appealing and accessible.
