The supremely talented Beijing Guitar Duo—Meng Su (on the left in the video) and Yameng Wang—serenade us with this exquisite version of the first part of Brazilian composer Radamés Gnattali’s much-played Suite Retratos: “Pixinguinha (Choro). ” Gnattali (1906–1988) named the movement after one of the most famous composers of popular music Brazil has produced (real name: Alfredo da Rocha Viana, Jr., 1897–1973). A studio version of the entire suite appears on the Duo’s 2010 CD Maracaípe, which, besides the Gnattali, includes several pieces by another Brazilian, Sérgio Assad.
